For the 150th Anniversary of the 'Trafila Garibaldina' and the Roman Republic

In 1999 the Garibaldi's Hut Conservation Society organised, by means of a special committee for the 150th anniversary of the "Trafila Garibaldina" and the Roman Republic, a series of, conferences and meetings in various places that were the 'theatre' of the "Trafila Garibaldina" to bring the public's attention to the epos of the Italian Risorgimento and to impart a better knowledge of a story in the not so distant past that took place in our country.

Among the numerous initiatives undertaken one worthy of note is a series of first day covers produced along the course of the "Trafila Garibaldina", on envelopes and postcards that record events, patriots and martyrs who played leading roles in those events.

All this material has been collected and published in the book "Memoria e attualità dell'epopea garibaldina" - atti e documenti del 150° anniversario della Trafila Garibaldina e della Repubblica Romana".

After the celebrations the Garibaldi's Hut Conservation Society continues to issue first day covers and postcards on the Risorgimento theme from the Roman Republic to the proclamation of the Italian Republic.

The support of the local press and specialised magazines were decisive factors leading to the success of various philatelic initiatives. The requests for material came to the Conservation Society from all over Italy.

The first day covers produced at that time were requested by enthusiasts of Risorgimento history and philatelic collectors from the Conservation Society and sought after in antiques market and philatelic markets.
