The
Pontaccio hut now called Garibaldi's hut is one of the most important and
intact places that record the 'trafila', the 14 days of august 1849 which
marked the memorable passage of Giuseppe Garibaldi through
Romagna and the lands of Ferrara.
It
is located in one of the most evocative places in the Po Delta National
Park.
Today
the hut is a historic monument under the protection of the Superintendent
for Archaeology. It is located 8 km northeast of Ravenna, the splendid
city of art.
The
hut can be reached by taking the S.S. 309, turning off for Marina Romea
and from the via Baiona, the road that runs alongside the industrial area
from the city to the northern lidos.
The tourist signposts, at the Ferry Terminal of the Port of
Ravenna, shows
the exact position. Once you have parked, follow the footpath through
tamarisk and privet
bushes to the hut. The path goes about 200 metres into
the Baiona marsh.
Garibaldi
arrived here after the fall of the Roman Republic chased by the Austrians
as he tried to reach Venice. The hut therefore marks an important stage in
the 'trafila' of Garibaldi.
Thanks to the work of the conservation society since 1879, Garibaldi's hut
has come down to us in perfect condition.
In
1972 the hut
was raised from its original level 1.25 m in order to remove
it from the water and protect it from land subsidence typical of the
Ravenna area.
The hut is easy to reach from the various coastal resorts of Romagna and
Ferrara and is continually
visited by tourists and school groups.
The
conservation society takes care of its use for educational purposes and
maintenance. The calendar of open days to the public goes from March to
September each year.
