| History of the Society The first statute dates from 1882 in which one reads "the society consists of 52 residents whose number may not increase. If however one should cease to belong to the society due to death or other cause, he will be replaced by another honest liberal resident, preferably the sons and brothers of the deceased person, members of the Democratic Union and those who have had an active role in the cause of the home country and liberty". In 2000 the statute introduced two new categories of member: extraordinary (only with the right to vote but not eligible) and the well-deserving members (members who are more than 75 years old). In this way the total number of members has reached 122. Each member has a lapel badge that signifies membership of the society and which he wears on official occasions. The society is sustained by annual contributions from the members and donations that come from various credit institutions in the city. |
