The embarkation of the 'garibaldini' on 13 bragozzi (2 masted fishing boats)

On Thursday morning at 6.30 - with a risky manoeuvre hindered by the storm, carried out personally by Garibaldi and Captain "Leggero", the 13 vessels reached the open sea. On the boat which the General defined as the 'fatal boat' because of the tragic fate of most of those aboard, Ugo Bassi, Don Ramorino and together Brigantino austriaco Oreste with Anita and others embarked.

After sailing for about 4 kilometres towards the south to catch the wind, Garibaldi turned north, sailing in that direction for the entire day with few supplies aboard and even less water for which Anita had great need.

The small fleet, gathered together in front of Porto Corsini on the General's orders, to meet an attack by the enemy, they arrived as far as the punta di Goro (2) (about 70 km north of Cesenatico) at 4 o'clock in the afternoon. The Austrian brigantine "Oreste" armed with two cannons and the schooner "Elisabetta" followed by the Felix-Sentinella, opened fire on the little fleet assisted by two small warships, the "Belluno" and "Vulcano".

The cannonade lasted the entire night until 7 a.m. on Friday morning.
