Garibaldi in the city of Ravenna

With the help of Giuseppe Montanari (known as Boschi), manager of the "Osteria al Porto", the Sartis rented a fishing boat from Chioggia for 20 marenghi, then Bòliga provided with supplies given him by Boschi returned to the hut during the morning. He informed Garibaldi of the rental and they agreed to meet at the port around 1 a.m. With this agreement he returned to Porto Corsini.

BragozzoMeanwhile Sumaren, who was very worried, left the hut to re-establish contact with the patriots of Ravenna consisting of two groups, the first containing Antonio Plazzi (Ballarden) Gregorio Zabberoni and Stefano Ortolani and the second group of Giuseppe Savini (Jufina) and Annibale Fabbri (Spassèl). After searching in vain they retraced their steps very tired and spent the night at the "Casa delle Aie" in the vicinity of the cemetery so as not to arouse suspicion by asking for transport to the city gates which were closed during the night.

A certain Luigi Sanzani (Mezzanott) emerged from the thick undergrowth all dirty and ragged who later was to show his steel. Sumaren invited him to join him to help the "two bandits" and took him to the hut. As soon as he entered the presence of the two fugitives Mezzanott he exclaimed "Oh! Garibaldi".

Updated with the situation and asked if he new the engineer Montanari, he proudly agreed to take a note written by Garibaldi with a pencil but energetically refused any recompense.

With the note hidden under the loose sole of a shoe he was stopped by an Austrian patrol on the Alaggio road. The commander told him "halt" hitting him in the face with the heel of his rifle then searched him but to no avail; only to continue the bad treatment. A second patrol, encountered further on, were told by Mezzanott that the blood on his face and the stains were due to a fall from a cabriolet. The second commander laughed in his face and without searching him let him continue to Ravenna.

Fabbrica vecchia in riva al CandianoThis heroism allowed the 'trafila' to continue. In fact, shortly after 7 p.m. Garibaldi saw a completely nude man come to the hut. It was Savini (Jufina) who, warned by the engineer Montanari, had come as quickly as possible taking the shortest route leaving the road and swimming across the vene di San Vitale. Then Fabbri (Spassèl) and Matteucci arrived and with Sumaren they reconnoitred the new route.

At 7.30 p.m. the fugitives left the hut. They crossed the Candianazzo and the Corsini canal in a boat, entered the San Vitalaccia and Monaldina pinewood, forded the Canal del Molino and hid in a cornfield (21).

It was about 9 p.m. and they had covered about 6 kilometres.

At 10.15 p.m. Antonio Plazzi, Stefano Ortolani and Gregorio Zabberoni of Ravenna joined them with two cabriolets. They took the Strada del Molino and then the Stradone di Porto Fuori, the left bank of the Fiumi Uniti a mare, the Cavedone, the right bank a Monte, the Marabina road, the old Romea, the left bank of the Savio and the Sabbioni track and towards 1 p.m. of 8 August arrived at the "Masseria Pergami - Belluzzi", about 21 kilometres from their previous stopping place. Here the fugitives were kindly received and given food by Regolo Dragoni, from Milan, an agent of Casa Pergami and Marco Abbondanzi, guardian of the farm, to wait for the friends in Ravenna to arrange things to take our fugitives our of danger.
